Question for written answer E-007687-16
to the Commission
Rule 130
Marielle de Sarnez (ALDE)

 Subject:  Climate refugees
 Answer in writing

The United Nations expects the number of climate refugees worldwide to reach 250 million in 2050. However, the concept of ‘climate refugees’ is not covered by the term ‘refugee’ as defined in the 1951 Geneva Convention relating to the Status of Refugees.

Does the Commission intend to propose a recommendation to establish the status of climate refugees at EU level, so that the rules on granting people asylum in Europe can be adapted to address this new fact of life?
