Pampers nappies and carcinogenic substances

Question for written answer E-008297-16
to the Commission
Rule 130
Marc Tarabella (S&D)

According to the results of an analysis carried out by an independent laboratory, Pampers nappies contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), which are oil-based products classified as carcinogenic by the European Union. The component which contains these carcinogenic molecules is called ‘petrolatum’ on the packaging. This product is known to the general public as vaseline.

Even if using this component in Pampers nappies is legal, as the quantity being used (0.2mg/kg) is below the threshold accepted by European regulations, it is still terrifying to think that children’s skin is coming into contact with toxic substances nearly 24/7 for 2-3 years.

What actions does the Commission intend to take in this regard as a matter of precaution?
