Parliamentary question - E-004381/2017Parliamentary question

    Checks on Brazilian meat

    Question for written answer E-004381-17
    to the Commission
    Rule 130
    Miriam Dalli (S&D)

The EU is one of the markets to have now suspended imports from 21 meat packing plants that are under investigation in Brazil — the world’s largest exporter of beef and poultry.

Recently, the EU’s Health and Food Security Commissioner wrote to the Brazilian Minister of Agriculture complaining that Brazil has done nothing to regain the trust of international partners.

Brazil has repeatedly ignored recommendations from the EU and, over the past six years, a number of its compliance failures have not been rectified. Why have we had to wait until this year for the EU to act?

Can the Commission outline the results of the EU audit conducted on Brazilian slaughterhouses and meatpacking companies in May 2017?

What follow-up action does the EU plan to take after the audit?
