Isoglucose

Question for written answer E-005087-17
to the Commission
Rule 130
Mairead McGuinness (PPE)

The EU sugar quota system dates from 1968 and will be abolished from 30 September 2017.

There are both positive and negative implications to abolishing sugar quotas. Some studies have shown that the abolition of quotas is expected to see the production of isoglucose triple between 2016 and 2025. According to EFSA, ‘high fructose intakes (25% of total energy) induce dyslipidaemia, insulin resistance and increased visceral adiposity in healthy and in hyperinsulinaemic insulin-resistant subjects’.

Has the Commission evaluated the health implications of abolishing quotas?

Does the Commission plan to introduce labelling to inform consumers of the presence of isoglucose in products?
