Consumer rights

Question for written answer E-006889-17
to the Commission
Rule 130
Laurenţiu Rebega (ENF)

Article 38 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union provides that Union policies are to ensure a high level of consumer protection.

The Committee on Petitions has recently received a lot of petitions regarding issues related to consumer rights, especially regarding unfair terms and conditions contained in mortgage contracts.

Taking into account Council Directive 93/13/EEC of 5 April 1993 on unfair terms in consumer contracts, its related case-law and the fact that, in general, consumers are in a weak position in their relationship with the banking establishments, what steps does the Commission intend to take in the future to better protect consumers against unfair/illegal terms in contracts?
