Question for written answer E-005142-18
to the Commission (Vice-President/High Representative)
Rule 130
Jonathan Arnott (EFDD)

Subject:  VP/HR — The situation of Christians in China
 Answer in writing

Under President Xi Jinping, religious believers in China are seeing their freedoms shrink dramatically. Experts and activists say that as he consolidates power, Xi is waging the most severe systematic suppression of Christians in the country since religious freedom was written into the Chinese constitution in 1982.

In recent weeks there have been reports of church closures, raids on churches, the burning of Bibles and religious paraphernalia, imprisonment, and increasing practical constraints making it difficult for Christians and other religious minorities to worship freely, including regulation of places of worship and bureaucratic interference with freedom of religion(1).

Is the VP/HR aware of the situation?

Will the VP/HR raise this issue with the Chinese counterparts in their next discussions?

Can an update be provided on any action currently being taken to raise this issue through diplomatic channels?
