Question for written answer E-006159-18
to the Commission
Rule 130
Ramón Luis Valcárcel Siso (PPE) , Gabriel Mato (PPE)

Subject:  The FORWARD programme for the outermost regions
 Answer in writing

On the occasion of the Annual Conference of the Outermost Regions (ORs) of the European Union held in the Canary Islands, the European Commission presented a number of fresh initiatives to support these regions through innovation and development.

One of these is a funding package for 24 partners representing all the ORs as part of the FORWARD project. EUR 4.3 million will be channelled into the project over the next three years under the Horizon Europe 2020 programme on EU research and innovation. This will help ORs to achieve new standards of research excellence and unlock their innovation potential so that they can successfully participate in such European projects. The FORWARD project involves the regional governments of nine ORs (Azores, Canary Islands, Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Réunion, Madeira, Martinique, Mayotte and Saint-Martin).

In view of this, does the Commission intend, in the midst of negotiations of the future Multiannual Financial Framework, to extend the FORWARD programme beyond 2020?

Furthermore, how will this programme relate to the newly created OR forum for exchanges of experience and dialogue in areas such as the blue economy and to the working groups in Réunion and the Canary Islands?
