E-000102/2019(ASW)
Answer given by Mr Andriukaitis on behalf of the European Commission
Question reference: E-000102/2019

1. Large measles outbreaks have occurred in the EU in previous years, notably in 2002-03 (37 679 cases), 2010-11 (65 213 cases) and 2017-18 (33 299 cases)(1). The outbreak in 2017-18 has been significant in its size, but not the largest in recent years.

In this context, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) continuously monitors measles circulation in the EU and the European Economic Area as well as EU neighbouring countries and publishes risk assessments(2), measles surveillance data(3), monthly monitoring and threat reports(4). Although vaccination policies are the competence of Member States, the Commission is coordinating in the Health Security Committee preparedness, assessment and outbreak management of vaccine-preventable diseases with Member States(5).

2. As a general rule, it is reasonable to contact healthcare services and enquire about specific health-related risks in country of destination and available prevention options, along the lines of national policies and recommendations, prior to international travel. The ECDC maintains a website with information for travellers and public health authorities about health issues related to specific destinations(6).
