Question for written answer E-000138-19
to the Commission (Vice-President/High Representative)
Rule 130
Pavel Telička (ALDE)

Subject:  VP/HR — Downgrade in the diplomatic status of the EU Delegation to the United States
 Answer in writing

In 2016, the Obama administration elevated the status of the EU Delegation to the United States from that of international organisation to member state. However, since President Trump was elected, EU-US relations have experienced some challenging times, and at the end of last year the decision was taken to downgrade the Delegation’s status back down to international organisation.

1. Was the VP/HR formally notified about this matter, and if so when?

2. What steps have the VP/HR and the European External Action Service (EEAS) taken to address this issue, and to what avail?

3. As far as the VP/HR is concerned, what have been the implications of the Trump administration’s decision?
