Energy efficiency in ports

Question for written answer E-000667-19
to the Commission
Rule 130
Maria Gabriela Zoană (S&D)

Cruise tourism of every kind is attracting an ever-increasing number of holidaymakers, making it a dynamic and constantly expanding sector.

Unfortunately, large cruise ships cause a great deal of pollution during their short stay in dock, prompting a number of European ports to start refusing them entry, thereby depriving many different local industries and businesses of a potentially lucrative source of income. Whilst in port, cruise ships need to keep their engines running in order to generate the power necessary for the proper functioning of all appliances and installations.

One way of helping to cut pollution and protect the environment more effectively would be to install high capacity outlets for cruise vessels using power generated by local suppliers for an agreed fee.

What measures will the Commission take in collaboration with the local, regional and national authorities to promote such projects and extend them to Europe as a whole?
