The Commission services are exploring a potential digital initiative to improve the portability of rights and the verification of social security coverage across borders, referred to as European Social Security Number.

This means considering different technical and policy options, their cost and benefits, as well as data protection requirements. Among other considerations, developing such a digital solution may entail the creation of a complex information technology infrastructure, which requires further analysis.
