The circular economy and improving the wellbeing of people and planet

Question for written answer E-003144-19

A recent report published by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation in collaboration with Material Economics, ‘Completing the Picture: How the circular economy tackles climate change’, argues that with 45% of emissions coming from the way we make and use products, putting in place a circular economy is a fundamental step towards achieving climate targets and the Paris Agreement. As well as tackling both the causes and effects of climate change, the circular economy can help meet other sustainable development goals, particularly SDG12 (responsible consumption and production). The report states further that increasing circularity in the economy is not only an opportunity to tackle emissions across sectors, but it is also an opportunity to design an economy that is restorative and regenerative, creating benefits for society, businesses and the environment.

In what ways does the Commission consider that transitioning to a more sustainable and circular EU economy can improve and secure the long-term wellbeing of people and planet?
