Parliamentary questions

29 November 2019
Answer given by Ms Malmström
on behalf of the European Commission
Question reference: E-003335/2019

The Conclusions adopted by the Council on 14 October 2019 stressed the importance of taking steps towards the resumption of negotiations on an ambitious and comprehensive Free Trade Agreement with Thailand.

In line with the Council conclusions, the Commission will deliberate on the importance and possible steps towards resumption of negotiations. It is therefore premature to comment on the specific elements before the Commission takes a decision on whether or not resuming negotiations.

More generally, the Commission would like to recall that in its trade and investment negotiations, the EU aims at concluding deals that bring growth opportunities for the EU economy and employment as a whole, while taking duly into account specific product sensitivities. Furthermore, Sustainability Impact Assessments are carried out in support of ongoing trade and investment negotiations in order to provide an in-depth analysis of their potential economic, social, human rights, and environmental impacts.
