Question for written answer E-004031/2019
to the Commission
Rule 138
Harald Vilimsky (ID)
 Answer in writing
Subject: Concerns about the Mercosur Agreement

The Mercosur trade agreement between the EU and Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay will present local farmers with new challenges. These include, for example, the import of beef from these countries and its possible impact on domestic standards.

How does the Commission assess the possibility of vast areas of forest being cleared in order to have enough suitable land in these South American countries?

How certain can the Commission be that animal welfare standards will be met, given the problems with meeting standards the EU is already having with animal transport to non-EU countries?

What is the Commission’s view of the fear of local farmers that they will have to close down their farms to make room for increasing supply?
