Chinese Belt and Road Initiative

Question for written answer E-004128/2019
to the Commission
Rule 138
Monika Beňová (S&D), Miroslav Číž (S&D)

The Chinese Belt and Road Initiative is expected to connect 70 % of the world’s population and 55 % of its GDP. The project will span 100 different countries across Asia, Africa, Europe and Oceania, at an estimated cost of between USD 1 trillion and USD 8 trillion. However, significant concerns as to the environmental impact of this project remain, and it is not yet clear whether or not it will be sustainable. It is widely regarded as the biggest project of the 21st century and will most probably have a considerable impact on world trade.

What is the Commission’s official position on this project?

Is it prepared to assess what economic benefits it could bring ?
