Question for written answer
to the Commission
Rule 138
Monika Beňová
 Answer in writing
 Subject: Complex securitisation

None of the major financial institutions or banks predicted the 2008 economic crisis. Many commentators now say that the crisis was inevitable due to complex and toxic debt securitisation. An inherent issue with debt securitisation is the collateralised debt obligation (CDOs). Unregulated CDOs play a critical role in creating weaknesses and unsustainable mechanisms within certain economies.

What steps has the Commission taken to address the issue of CDOs ?

Is it tracking the complexity of debt restructuring within the EU?
