E-004344/2019
Question for written answer E-004344/2019
to the Commission
Rule 138
Özlem Demirel (GUE/NGL)
 Answer in writing
Subject: EMSA as the new drone agency

The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) has so far concluded contracts with at least ten European countries for drone operations off their coasts. Flights have taken place for Iceland and Croatia, for example. Initially, Frontex also requested regular drone operations to monitor Greek waters from EMSA. Similar requests for 2020 were also made by Bulgaria, Greece, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, France and the UK. The Commission is expecting further requests from other Member States and EU agencies.

1. Which Member States or EU agencies are requesting drone operations from EMSA for 2020-2021 as things currently stand? Where exactly will the flights take place?

2. With which companies have operator contracts been concluded and which specific drones are used in each case (please specify type and manufacturer)?

3. Where exactly are the planned drone operations, planned by EMSA for Frontex in Greece from October 2019 onwards, taking place? Why have they been delayed?
