Pollution of the Solofrana river

Question for written answer E-000088/2020

Rule 138
Rosa D'Amato (NI)

A worrying picture of the quality of the waters in the River Sarno and its tributaries, the Solofrana and Cavaiola rivers, has emerged from the investigation entitled ‘Buone e cattive acque’ [Good and bad waters].

The quality of the water at 10 of the 16 points monitored in 2017 fell below the standard required, with four rated as having a ‘poor’ water quality once all the scores had been calculated, and the remaining six rated as ‘bad’.

The Solofrana river emits a disgusting smell which can be attributed to the illegal dumping of industrial effluent from the tanning hub in Solofra and other industries near the river. Waste from domestic consumers who are not yet connected to the sewer network or sewage treatment plants also runs into the river.

The colour of the water and the scum floating there clearly point to the extremely poor quality of the surface water and the fact that the plants treating effluent at the ‘Alto Sarno’ sewage treatment complex in the municipalities of Solofra and Mercato S. Severino are not operating properly. These plants have been placed under a preventive attachment order with right to use [1] .
