Question for written answer
to the Vice-President of the Commission / High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy
Rule 138
Antonio López-Istúriz White
 Answer in writing
Subject: European Union policy towards Iran – human rights and demonstrations

In a recent official visit to Iran, the VP/HR held meetings with the President of the Islamic Republic, Hassan Rouhani, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Javad Zarif, and the Speaker of the Majlis, Ali Larijani.

In November of 2019, Iranian men and women took to the streets once again and made it clear that they are fed up with their government’s irresponsible and totalitarian behaviour. These protests resulted in 1 500 innocent protesters being slaughtered and another 7 000 being irregularly detained. These acts constitute flagrant violations of human rights and an unacceptable use of security forces to drown out freedom of expression and of opinion.

During his meetings with the highest representatives of the Iranian regime, did the VP/HR address these issues and request explanations for these unacceptable and violent actions?
