Parliamentary question - E-000851/2020(ASW)Parliamentary question
E-000851/2020(ASW)

Answer given by Mr Breton on behalf of the European Commission

According to a study commissioned by the Commission[1], the benefits of introducing a common charger interface would be enhanced if combined with measures aimed at the re-use of existing chargers. A combination of options, going beyond the empowerment provided by the Radio Equipment Directive (RED) 2014/53/EU, is therefore being considered.

The analysis carried out by the Commission in support of a possible future regulatory proposal takes also into account new developments such as fast and wireless charging.

The Commission is considering future-proof solutions, which would allow technological innovation in the sector.

Appropriate transitional periods would guarantee that the industry and consumers have the time to adapt to new measures, whilst not suddenly making obsolete existing devices. This would allow a natural dephasing, also taking into account the fast change cycle of such high-level electronics.

Products placed on the EU market will have to be compliant with the relevant requirements, and therefore the common charger interface, should this be made mandatory.
