Question for written answer
to the Commission
Rule 138
Carlo Fidanza, Raffaele Stancanelli, Raffaele Fitto, Pietro Fiocchi, Nicola Procaccini
 Subject: Crisis of the airline Air Italy S.p.A. and its impact on employment and the economy

The airline Air Italy S.p.A., established in Sardinia, has decided to wind up the company. The liquidation would result in the loss of 1 200 direct jobs and several thousand jobs in related businesses and the supply chain. Air Italy is 49 % owned by Qatar Airways which, despite its announced willingness to do so, cannot inject any additional funding into the company in order not to exceed the 49 % ceiling laid down by EU legislation. In addition, there would be a negative impact on the entire economy of the region and, in particular, on the tourism sector. The mobility of people living in Sardinia is already significantly affected by the high cost of transport and the limited transport links available; that situation would be further exacerbated by the fact that Air Italy is part of the Sardinia Region’s ‘territorial continuity’ plan, with no compensation charges.

Can the Commission therefore say:

whether it is aware of the seriousness of Air Italy’s situation and has asked the Italian Government to intervene;

whether it would not consider it appropriate to allow the non-EU partner to increase its share capital, on a temporary basis;

whether it intends to authorise the new territorial continuity plan drawn up by the Region of Sardinia?
