In 2018, Spain’s Court of Auditors audited the accounts of the Catholic Church in Spain for the first time. It had previously been exempt from such audits.

It was noted that during 2018 Spain’s Bishops’ Conference was allocated EUR 268 million – the money came from personal income tax receipts. On the basis of the financial statements of the Bishops’ Conference for 2018 and 2019, the Court of Auditors casts doubt, in a preliminary report, over whether the allocation and monitoring of the sum concerned meet European standards.

This is apparently the case in particular with regard to a number of transfers of around EUR 20 million to fund a firm called TRECE (formerly known as Trece TV), of which the Church is the majority shareholder.
