Impact of 5G technology on human and animal health
28.2.2020
Question for written answer E-001204/2020
to the Commission
Rule 138
Pascal Arimont (PPE)
While 5G networks will certainly offer a much faster internet connection, many are wondering whether the technology poses a health risk. The radiation from 5G mobile phones might be harmful for animals and birds too; for example, high-frequency electromagnetic waves are said to alter insects’ body temperatures and impair their ability to orient themselves.
However, real-life studies in this area – also addressing the network densification that will accompany 5G’s deployment – are lacking.
- 1.What is the Commission’s assessment of the dangers that the 5G technology due to be deployed in the EU poses for human and animal health?
- 2.Will new studies be carried out – under real-life conditions – to ascertain the risks to people (the ‘Beating Cancer’ masterplan) and animals (EU Pollinators Initiative)?
- 3.Does the Commission intend to use these studies as a basis for adjusting the electromagnetic radiation limit values?
