Safety of nuclear installations in the European Union

In the EU, the safety of nuclear installations is the responsibility of the licence holders, under the supervision of the national regulatory authorities. The Euratom Treaty has laid down, by means of directives, the basic rules governing the protection of the health of workers and the general public from the dangers of ionising radiation.

Not only does the Commission supervise the transposition of these directives into national law by the Member States, initiating infringement procedures where necessary, but it also examines any future investment projects in the nuclear sector in the Member States. The Commission also has the power to verify the ‘operation and efficiency’ of the continuous monitoring facilities which monitor the level of radioactivity in the air, water and soil.

In the light of the above, and given that, at the end of 2019, there were 124 nuclear reactors operating in 14 EU Member States, can the Commission answer the following questions:
