E-001461/2020
Question for written answer
to the Commission
Rule 138
Ismail Ertug, Norbert Neuser
 Answer in writing
Subject: Compulsory wearing of seat belts in school buses

On 27 January 2020, a school bus was involved in a terrible accident in the German state of Thuringia. More than 20 children were on the bus, two of whom were killed in the accident. It is unclear whether the children were wearing seat belts. Although an EU-wide seat belt requirement has been in force in buses since Directive 2003/20/EC, this rule unfortunately does not apply to regular services.

1. Does the Commission plan to act in this matter in the future?

2. Does it have any information about the extent to which the obligation to wear seat belts on coach trips is respected in the Member States, especially in the case of school trips?
