Immediate resumption of the free movement of foodstuffs and medicinal products at the Italian border

Question for written answer E-001608/2020
to the Commission
Rule 138
Antonio Tajani (PPE)

The Slovenian authorities have blocked the border with Italy, banning access to all vehicles over 3.5 tonnes without a Slovenian registration. Vehicles, trucks and lorries are being diverted by the border police, which does not even allow vehicles going to other countries to transit through Slovenia. Austria is also imposing restrictions at its borders with Italy. In light of the crisis, the blocking of the free movement of goods could seriously impair the supply of foodstuffs and medicinal products required by European citizens.

The President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has said that the single market in goods should continue to function, deprecating unilateral measures by national governments and noting that, in this state of crisis, what is needed is solidarity and not closed borders.

Has the Commission been informed of these border closures and of their respective durations?

In light of the potential consequences, does the European Commission consider these measures proportionate and legitimate?

What measures does the Commission intend to take to restore such free movement within the single market?
