Question for written answer
to the Vice-President of the Commission / High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy
Rule 138
Bert-Jan Ruissen, Cristian Terheş
 Answer in writing
 Subject: Religious freedom in India

On 15 March 2020, the Evangelical Fellowship of India (EFI) published its 2019 annual report on violence against Christians in the country. The report indicated a significant increase (12.5 % from 2018) in incidents of violence against Christians. This mainly concerns physical violence, threats and intimidation, but also the disruption of church services by religious radicals or the police. Violence has continued in 2020, according to the EFI.

1. Is the VP/HR aware of the increased violence against Christians in India in general and of this specific annual report?

2. What is his position on such cases of violence against Christians in India and has he raised any concerns about this situation with the Indian authorities?

3. At the end of 2019, the mandate of the EU Special Envoy for freedom of religion and belief outside the EU ended. Has the mandate of this Special Envoy already been renewed or will it be soon? If not, what is the underlying reason for this?
