Parliamentary questions

24 July 2020
E-002443/2020(ASW)
Answer given by Ms Johansson
on behalf of the European Commission
Question reference: E-002443/2020

The new airport terminal for returns in Kabul has not been financed by EU funds.

Between 13 September 2016 and 30 March 2020, 1 844 Afghan nationals have been returned from EU Member States in 73 operations by charters organised by the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex). In addition, 58 Afghan nationals have been returned with Frontex support on scheduled flights between 9 May 2019 and 30 March 2020. Furthermore, individual Member States have carried out a number of returns without the participation of Frontex, concerning which the Commission is not able to provide the exact figures.

The Commission has put in place mechanisms to monitor the implementation of the reintegration support, in cooperation with the Afghan authorities and the implementing partners.

The monitoring process is based on prior agreed indicators, and progress and results achieved feed into regular Joint Way Forward Working Group meetings.
