Question for written answer
to the Commission
Rule 138
Elissavet Vozemberg-Vrionidi (PPE)
Subject: Supporting tourism and restarting travel

One of the areas that has been negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic is the tourism and travel sector, and the situation there is getting worse by the day. As the industry is facing evolving challenges, a coordinated response at EU level is paramount. The unprecedented closure of international borders and the suspension of travel to traditional travel destinations create a huge operational challenge for all sectors of the economy related to transport and tourism.

Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton has pointed out that tourism was the first sector of the economy to be affected by the crisis and that it will probably be the last to recover. Indeed, due to COVID-19 there has been an unprecedented drop in demand, in fact activity has come to a complete standstill, so that tourism is facing significant liquidity problems.

Given that, in order to support the tourism industry across the EU, a harmonised approach to the travel sector with common rules is required, so as not to confuse travellers with separate measures applicable in each Member State individually, and in order to gradually return to normal travel, will the Commission say:

Will it immediately adopt common European protocols for health controls for travellers/tourists, in order to boost tourism and travel ahead of the summer season?
