Question for written answer
to the Commission
Rule 138
Nicola Procaccini (ECR)
 Subject: Key role of wholesale markets

In view of:

the key role played by wholesale markets in the dynamics relating to the distribution of agricultural and agri-food products at EU level;

the added value they bring in terms of competitiveness;

their resilience to the impact of the health emergency, as demonstrated by the continued distribution of fresh produce, both within and outside EU borders;

the need to develop a strategic plan for the modernisation and transformation of the markets into multi-purpose, computerised logistics hubs;

the need to promote the food safety and traceability of products passing through wholesale markets and centres;

the usefulness, within the Farm to Fork Strategy, of the measure to convert wholesale markets and centres into tools for defending and promoting agricultural products;

the need to identify recognisability and traceability systems for local products, also by converting some market sectors into local logistics green hubs, for the concentration of products and their local distribution to the final consumers;

the incentive measures relating to surplus recovery systems for the donation of unsold products;

can the Commission say:

1. whether it intends to take any specific measures to achieve the above objectives;

2. what action it intends to take with regard to the role of wholesale markets within the new CAP?
