2019 US law on protecting Europe’s security of energy supply
27.5.2020
Question for written answer E-003209/2020
to the Commission
Rule 138
Sven Simon (PPE)
In December 2019 the US adopted a sanctions law known as the PEESA (Protecting Europe’s Energy Security Act of 2019). It seems clear from what has been said about the law that it will be used to delay or even prevent the completion of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
- 1.Has the Commission tasked its Legal Service with producing a report on the compatibility of the PEESA with international law and possible retaliatory measures?
- 2.Is the Commission considering lodging a strong protest against the US’s pending draft sanctions, reciprocal measures and a protective shield for European companies affected by sanctions?
- 3.What is the Commission’s assessment of importing climate-damaging gas obtained through fracking from the US as an alternative to Nord Stream 2, particularly in the light of the Green Deal?
