Question for written answer
to the Commission
Rule 138
Theodoros Zagorakis (PPE)
Subject: Establishment of hygiene protocols in hotels

In view of the reopening of hotels in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, the Commission should draw up official protocols regarding the hygiene and protection of hotel employees and guests applicable in all Member States of the European Union. These protocols should ensure the quality of the services that hotels provide to guests in terms of compliance with hygiene rules and protection from the coronavirus and set out the measures that guests should take in order to to protect both themselves and hotel staff from transmission of the virus. It is therefore vital to redesign and implement quality standards regarding health and safety in the tourism industry.

Does the Commission recognise the urgent need for the immediate establishment of hygiene protocols in hotels in order to allow them to begin operating again rapidly and safely, having adjusted to the new conditions? Does it intend to promote common European hygiene protocols in the hotel industry?

What measures will it to take to ensure that there is no major downturn in the EU Member States’ tourism industry?
