The balance between economic, ecological and social sustainability should be ensured. An impact assessment on the fishing and aquaculture sectors should have been carried out before proposing the EU Biodiversity Strategy and its ambitious targets, especially given the current challenges and the economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Commission has proposed increasing marine protected area coverage from 11 to 30 percent, including a 10 percent no-take zone for strict conservation purposes.

What is the basis for these proposals?
