Question for written answer
to the Commission
Rule 138
Vincenzo Sofo (ID)
Subject: Infrastructure development in Calabria’s hinterland

Development of economically / socially least developed areas is one of the European Union’s primary objectives, to the point that actions in support of territorial cohesion also figure in the ‘Next Generation EU’ proposal presented by the Commission for the continent’s recovery after COVID-19.

Calabria figures among the territories considered the most disadvantaged in the EU. It is one of the poorest regions in Europe with many impediments to development, due in particular to the lack of adequate infrastructure that would enable communication within the region and from outside it. The missing infrastructure includes strategic – but still uncompleted – works to connect the hinterland, just some examples of which are the Medio Savuto road, the Sibari-Silana road and the Bovalino-Bagnara major highway.

However, so far the EU’s strategy to reduce the gap between regions such as those in southern Italy, and others elsewhere, has not produced the hoped for results and note needs to be taken of the fact that the economic and social development of areas such as Calabria will be impossible without adequate infrastructure.

Can the Commission say, therefore, what action it plans to take to ensure that strategic infrastructure works such as those mentioned above are completed within as short a time as possible?
