Question for written answer E-003841/2020/rev.1
to the Council
Rule 138
Robert Biedroń (S&D), Evelyn Regner (S&D), Maria Noichl (S&D), Pina Picierno (S&D), Heléne Fritzon (S&D), Maria-Manuel Leitão-Marques (S&D)
Subject: Gender equality as one of the Council’s priorities

Despite being one of the EU’s main priorities, gender equality is far from being achieved. The issue has gained momentum thanks to the commitment of both the new Commission and Parliament. However, real results will not be achieved unless the Council gets on board as well.

1. Are there any plans to update the Council’s existing configurations so that they would adequately reflect the importance of gender equality among the EU’s priorities and provide a platform for the relevant ministers to address the most urgent issues related to gender equality and women’s rights? In the meantime, is there a designated working group on this issue?

2. The role of the European Council is to define the EU’s overall political priorities and set its agenda by adopting ‘conclusions’, which identify issues of concern and actions to take. Does the Council consider gender equality as one the EU’s key priorities and ‘an issue of concern’ that ought to be addressed in the relevant conclusions?
