Question for written answer E-004163/2020
to the Commission
Rule 138
Vincenzo Sofo (ID)
 Answer in writing
 Subject: Risk of COVID-19 spreading in Calabria due to arrival of migrants testing positive to the virus

Over the last few days, 70 migrants have landed in the municipality of Roccella Jonica, Calabria, 28 of whom tested positive to COVID-19; they have been spread around the region of Calabria leading to protests and fearful reactions from the local population.

The panic created by this event – also reflected in the media – is leading to a perception that there are health risks in the region. This is having negative repercussions in terms of tourist flows for the upcoming summer season.

The Commission, with the support of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, has a duty to ensure public health protection for EU citizens and to guide and coordinate the institutions in taking appropriate measures to that end.

In view of the above, can the Commission say what action it intends to take to call on the Italian Government to:

1. prevent the arrival – especially illegal arrivals – of immigrants whose health status could pose a serious risk to the Italian population;

2. protect the Calabrian population in order to prevent infected people from staying in the region and spreading the virus?
