Heart health action plan
15.7.2020
Question for written answer E-004227/2020
to the Commission
Rule 138
Rosa Estaràs Ferragut (PPE), Dolors Montserrat (PPE)
COVID-19 is particularly dangerous for people with an underlying heart condition, such as structural heart disease. As population ageing in Europe increases, so too does the percentage of people with undiagnosed and untreated structural heart disease. This means that the number of people at risk from pandemics such as COVID-19 is rising sharply. While more research is needed to minimise the impact of the current pandemic, we also need to prepare for the future and reduce the vulnerability of the elderly. Prioritisation, detection and the appropriate treatment of structural heart disease helps to lower the number of people in this risk group, thereby reducing vulnerability both in the short term and in the case of future outbreaks.
- 1.Will the Commission include the detection of structural heart disease as a priority in future action plans on ageing and to address age-related diseases?
- 2.Will the Commission take into account the need to prioritise healthy ageing and reduce the vulnerability of the elderly in its Green Paper on Ageing?
