 Subject: Synthetic fuels

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) promotes the use of CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) and CCU (Carbon Capture and Utilisation) technologies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. One way of recycling captured carbon dioxide is by processing it to make e-fuels.

However, both the promotion of basic research and grants for pilot projects in this field have so far been lacking.

1. What is the extent of the EU’s financial support for the promotion of technology for synthetic fuels?

2. Why are vehicles powered by synthetic fuels not recognised as zero-emission vehicles?

3. Why are electric vehicles recognised as zero-emission, even though manufacturing the batteries and producing the electricity results in emissions which are in fact higher than those of a vehicle with an internal combustion engine using synthetic fuels?
