Exemption from the IMU municipal tax in Italy
30.7.2020
Question for written answer E-004440/2020
to the Commission
Rule 138
Silvia Sardone (ID)
It is rumoured that the EU is set to recommend changes to Italy’s real estate taxation.
The EU recommendations published after Ecofin's final meeting of last year made clear that the exemption of first residences from the IMU municipal tax was not viewed favourably.
It seems as though the Commission opposes this exemption and would have preferred the introduction of a progressive property tax scheme, based on household income.
In view of the above:
- 1.Does the Commission intend to ask Italy to reimpose the tax on main residences?
- 2.Does it intend to ask Italy to introduce a property tax?
- 3.What is the Commission’s view on taxation in Italy?
