European plan for the protection of Europe’s archaeological sites

In the wake of the fire at the ancient archaeological site in Mycenae in Greece, and following a series of recent disasters at archaeological sites throughout Europe, there is once again an urgent need for a comprehensive plan to protect Europe’s archaeological sites from natural disasters.

In view of the fact that the protection of our cultural heritage is one of the EU’s stated objectives, can the Commission say:

• 1.Does it intend to present a comprehensive strategy for the protection of antiquities and to address the risks posed by the rapid increase in extreme weather events?
• 2.Given that Member States are unable to bear the brunt of the changes required in this economic climate, does it intend to provide additional financial support from European funds during the new programming period to achieve this objective?
