Protection of meat and meat product designations

Question for written answer E-005267/2020
to the Commission
Rule 138
Theodoros Zagorakis (PPE)

In recent years, many vegetable products have been placed on the market with designations implying that they are of animal origin (sausage, burger, etc.). In addition, the advertising or marketing strategies of certain food business operators are designed to promote such products as alternatives to animal-based foods.

Use of the same designations for different food categories should be avoided in the interests of fair competition and transparency regarding the true nature of a given product, enabling consumers make informed choices.
