Answer given by Mr Wojciechowski
on behalf of the European Commission
Question reference: E-005457/2020

The examination procedure under the regulation (EU) 2015/1843 (the Trade Barrier Regulation) for the Tequila Geographical Indications (GI) case is ongoing. All elements, including the ones mentioned by the Honourable Member, will be taken in due consideration. The relevant report shall clarify the compatibility of the measures adopted by Mexico with international trade obligations. The report shall normally be issued within five months of the date of publication of the Notice of Initiation(1) but may be extended to seven months in complex cases.

The Commission attaches great importance to the effective protection of GIs within the EU and in the world alike(2). Protection and promotion of GIs are also key instruments of the EU’s Agricultural Policy. Therefore, the Commission will undertake all necessary actions to ensure the respect of the EU legislation in place and to honour EU’s international commitments.
