Rule 138
Lena Düpont (PPE), Markus Pieper (PPE), Monika Hohlmeier (PPE)
Up until 2019 the EU had allocated EUR 703 million to Greece and EUR 122 million to Italy in emergency assistance from the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF). In addition, Greece received EUR 328 million and Italy EUR 394 million under their national AMIF programmes for 2014-2020. Since 2015, according to the Commission’s ‘Managing Migration Greece’ report, Greece has received a total of EUR 2.64 billion from EU funds, while Italy has received EUR 1.03 billion (Managing Migration Italy). In its special report No 24/2019 entitled ‘Asylum, relocation and return of migrants’, the European Court of Auditors identified shortfalls and significant disparities between the objectives and the results of this use of funds. There was no earmarking of funds for use in hotspots.
- 1.How much EU funding was requested for the hotspots in Greece and Italy? In what instalments and for what period was it requested?
- 2.Can the Commission compile an exact list to show how EU funding was used? For which hotspots in both countries was the EU funding used?
- 3.In the Commission’s view, how can the earmarked use of funds be monitored? Precisely what checks took place in the situation described above?
