Answer given by Ms Ferreira
on behalf of the European Commission
Question reference: E-006607/2020

1. The Commission has committed to paying particular attention to the role of the outermost regions (OR) in the European Green Deal communication(1) and to ensuring that their concerns and interests are taken into consideration in relevant proposals as laid out in its communication on strategic partnership with the EU's outermost regions(2).

The Commission therefore intends to take into account the OR specific situation when assessing the potential impact of options for the revision of the Energy Taxation Directive. The economic and social impacts of including flights covering OR are being analysed as part of the impact assessment on the review and extension of the EU’s emissions trading system.

2. The Commission’s Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy stressed that the most serious challenge facing the transport sector is to significantly reduce emissions. At the same time, it highlighted the need for affordable and accessible mobility for all regions, including OR(3). The OR can benefit from EU support — including from the Cohesion Fund and European Regional Development Fund‐ for sustainable, climate resilient mobility, including cross border mobility.
