Violating rights and exclusion in Cañada Real
10.1.2021
Question for written answer E-000099/2021
to the Commission
Rule 138
Miguel Urbán Crespo (The Left)
Since October 2020, 4 500 people, including 2 000 children, living in sectors 5 and 6 of Cañada Real have been without electricity, with no proper explanation provided by the competent authorities. Consequently, Madrid’s regional government is in breach of the Regional Pact, violating residents’ rights and endangering children’s lives, and has been denounced by the United Nations, especially in the context of a quadrupling of the number of people infected by the coronavirus in the capital.
In its resolution of 13 November 2020, the European Parliament warns how the pandemic is particularly affecting those most vulnerable and, from this perspective, takes into consideration the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union.
- 1.What is the Commission’s position when human rights, especially the rights of the child, are being violated on European soil in the midst of a pandemic?
- 2.Is the Commission considering taking action against the regional government, given that it is denying families access to decent living conditions in the midst of the pandemic in spite of the ERDF funds at its disposal — funds that it has so far failed to implement but which have been intended to be used to remedy this situation since 2014?
