The five biggest US tech companies, also known as GAFAM (Google (Alphabet), Apple, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft), have a combined market capitalisation of approximately USD 7.2 trillion[1]. In comparison, the EU has a nominal GDP of approximately USD 17.4 trillion[2], around 2.5 times that amount.
These companies possess an unparalleled collection of user data which is the most extensive in the world. They are also in a unique position to evaluate this data by means of algorithms and to determine what information is presented to the users of their services. Moreover, these companies dispose of comparatively large financial resources.
- 1.In the light of the above, what does the Commission know about data held by these companies concerning people living in EU Member States?
- 2.What is the Commission's assessment of the ability of these companies to manipulate people in EU Member States and of the impact this has on the democratic shaping of public opinion?
- 3.What measures is the EU taking to protect users from Member States from external manipulation and espionage, and to guarantee democratic conditions?
