Answer given by Ms Johansson
on behalf of the European Commission
Question reference: E-000603/2021

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Greek authorities have put in place restrictive measures to protect public health, which apply across the territory, including to reception centres. Residents of the reception and accommodation facilities are allowed to enter and exit the facilities for specific reasons, including to cover basic needs or for pursuing their asylum procedure.

Works to improve the reception conditions in the temporary Reception and Identification Centre (RIC) of Mavrovouni are progressing with the support of the Commission’s Taskforce on Migration Management.

The Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration did soil sampling and testing for lead contamination to verify the safety and security of the Mavrovouni RIC. The results and details of the testing are public(1). Out of the 12 soil samples collected, one sample from a point next to an administration area exceeded the threshold.

The Greek authorities have fenced the area, added new soil, built a concrete base in the administration area and an additional layer of one meter of soil has been added to the whole area. Additional controls will be performed once the works are finished.

The new centre on Lesvos will be a multi-purpose centre, with an entry-exit system allowing its residents to enter and exit using access cards.
