The migration routes from the Maghreb, the Sahel and West Africa are a huge challenge for Spain and the Canary Islands in particular, where more than 20 000 migrants arrived in 2020.
This worrying situation could become worse once the Valletta Agreement and the EUR 5 billion Trust Fund to support partners in the Maghreb, the Sahel and West Africa expire at the end of 2021. The Spanish Government has submitted to the Commission a proposal for a multidisciplinary strategy to address the migration and asylum challenges in this region, which would require a budget that is at least equal to, or greater than, the Trust Fund.
- 1.Can the Commission say what amount has been allocated to asylum in the 2021-2027 budget, in total and for each year, detailing the amounts for each objective and geographical area (in third countries)?
- 2.How does the Commission intend to strengthen diplomatic relations, socio-economic support and security in the Maghreb, the Sahel and West Africa?
- 3.What amount will be allocated to these objectives in the period 2021-2027?
