Answer given by Ms Gabriel
on behalf of the European Commission
Question reference: E-000980/2021

The Commission will support Member States to improve cancer prevention and care through the Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and stimulate cancer research and innovation through the pending Horizon Europe Cancer Mission. Both initiatives are closely linked, setting out a clear commitment to tackle the disease over the coming years.

1. Beyond a pending Mission on Cancer, Horizon Europe(1) is expected to support cancer research and innovation with an overall contribution of EUR 2 billion, reflecting the EU’s long-standing priority of supporting cancer research and innovation(2).

2. Funding of cancer research activities beyond the amount foreseen in the Beating Cancer Plan will depend on approval of the Mission on Cancer under the Horizon Europe Programme, currently in preparation.
