On 2 March 2021, an Egyptian court decided to prolong by a further 45 days the detention of the Egyptian student Patrick Zaky, who has been held in Cairo for almost a year now. Zaky stands accused of inciting protests, attempting to overthrow the government, using social media to threaten national security and spreading propaganda on behalf of terrorist groups. No evidence has ever been produced to substantiate these charges which have, nevertheless, caused him to be unjustly detained without due process of law.
1. Has the Vice-President / High Representative set up a diplomatic channel for discussions with the Egyptian Government? Has action been taken with the Italian Government to follow developments in this case?
2. What initiatives will he take to promote determined and effective action to obtain Mr Zaky’s immediate release?
